My PhD project, titled "A Mindful ACT: Developing a Brief ACT-Based Intervention for People Receiving Osteopathy Treatment and Living with Persistent Pain," focused on creating and evaluating a concise intervention grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The goal was to support individuals undergoing osteopathic care who were living with chronic pain by enhancing their pain management strategies and psychological flexibility.
This research was conducted in collaboration with the Health and Wellbeing Academy at Swansea University, providing a unique opportunity to integrate academic insights with practical healthcare delivery. Under the supervision of Professor Jaynie Rance, I designed a brief, ACT-based intervention tailored specifically to the needs of this patient group. The intervention incorporated evidence-based techniques to help participants develop greater acceptance of their pain, reduce pain-related distress, and engage more fully in activities aligned with their personal values.
The findings were encouraging, demonstrating improvements in pain acceptance and reductions in emotional distress, as well as increased engagement in meaningful life activities. These results suggest that integrating brief ACT-based interventions into osteopathic treatment plans could provide a practical and effective way to enhance patient well-being in clinical settings. This work contributes to the growing evidence base for using ACT in the management of persistent pain and offers a foundation for future research and application in healthcare practices.
In addition to the intervention, I developed a user-friendly workbook, designed to support participants in their journey toward better self-management. The workbook, which complements the intervention, is available for free (here).
