This project, lead by Prof. Nikos Ntoumanis, explores an innovative approach to promoting physical activity and enhancing well-being through digital training using self-enactable behavior change techniques (BCTs). These techniques empower individuals to actively engage in changing their behaviors by equipping them with actionable strategies they can implement independently. The intervention builds on a new taxonomy of 123 self-enactable BCTs, focusing on those with the strongest evidence for effectiveness.
The project aims to dvelop a digital platform that offers tailored training in self-enactable BCTs, enabling individuals to enhance their motivation, adherence, and long-term maintenance of physical activity behaviors.
The project will unfold in three phases. During the first phase, co-development with end-users will focus on designing a user-friendly digital platform, featuring interactive content, videos, and gamification elements to enhance engagement. The second phase will involve feasibility testing through a pilot randomized controlled trial to assess the intervention’s engagement, acceptability, and fidelity. The final phase will focus on evaluating the outcomes, such as changes in physical activity levels, psychological well-being and disseminating findings through academic publications, conferences, and open access resources.
By addressing the global burden of physical inactivity—associated with significant health and economic costs—this project supports public health goals. It will offer an accessible and individualized solution to promote sustainable lifestyle changes and has the potential for broader applications in areas such as smoking cessation, sleep hygiene, and alcohol use.
